The Centre was built on the site of strawberry fields in Shirley that existed up to the early part of the 20th century.

The fields were eventually sold for housing in 1918 and Shirley expanded to form one of Southampton's largest suburbs.

These ceramic panels can be seen on the ends of houses opposite the Centre, in Randolph Street, Shirley

Freemantle and Shirley Community Centre is run by a dedicated group of trustees. 

The centre has been serving the local community for many years and in 2008 the Centre was redeveloped and enlarged to its present state.

Since then, the Centre has been providing low cost room hire to the local community and groups.

In 2019 the Centre was bought by the trustees from Southampton City Council 

through Local Asset Transfer.

Social Care in Action,  run a day services facility in one of the rooms of the Centre during weekdays.
